Neo Geo Information

Neo Geo – a system of arcade machines, released by SNK (Shin Nihon Kikaku) in October 1990 in Japan. But also the system has the full name of Neo Geo Multi Video System (abbreviated as Neo Geo MVS). Neo Geo means new world. Shortly after the release of MVS, SNK decided to conquest the market of home video games. Console called Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System (Neo Geo AES) was released and it was completely identical to the arcade machine. The resemblance was in software and hardware configuration, however, had a different slot for cartridges. Obviously, SNK didn’t want that AES would be used as a gaming machine. Smart move, but still there were some enthusiasts who have created an adapter – Phantom MVS converter thingy. By the way, the price for home system was $500 which at that time considered a big amount of money. However, up to 4 people at once could play on it!

Neo Geo games offers the user a fairly high-quality 2D graphics and high quality sound. The game system was based on a 16-bit Motorola 68000 processor and an 8-bit Z80, which was used as an audio compressor. Le Neo-Geo MVS (Multi Video System) est un système de jeux vidéo pour borne d'arcade compatible JAMMA destiné aux salles d'arcade et créé par la société japonaise SNK en 1990. Parallèlement, SNK commercialise une console de jeux vidéo de salon, la Neo-Geo AES, partageant la même base matérielle. SNK arrête la production de tous ses autres systèmes et se consacre au Neo-Geo. Ce matériel fonctionne suivant le couple carte mère et cartouche de jeu vidéo, possédant la capacité de connecter plusieurs jeux en même temps, lui conférant ainsi une modularité inégalée dans le domaine de l'arcade. La qualité des jeux et les choix techniques gagnants vont faire du Neo-Geo un succès, un des systèmes d'arcade les plus célèbres et les plus vendus au monde. Un bon nombre des jeux d'arcade les plus marquants sortent sur le Neo-Geo MVS, comme les jeux des séries Art of Fighting, The King of Fighters, Metal Slug, Fatal Fury ou encore Samurai Shodown. Ce système d'arcade connaît plusieurs révisions et avancées techniques, il sera aussi bien converti (par SNK) que copié ou imité par la concurrence dans le but d'égaler sa réussite. Sur la console est connue pour son prix très élevé et par sa très grande longévité. Au vu de son prix et de ses caractéristiques par rapport aux consoles concurrentes de la même époque, elle est considérée par beaucoup comme la « Rolls Royce » des consoles. Le Neo-Geo arrêtera sa grande épopée au début des années 2000 quand l'aventure SNK sombrera.
